The Shield Table Lamp is an exercise in geometric tension. Designed by French-Italian architect Joris Poggioli, the lamp features a tall, slender vertical stem that supports a broad, protective "shield" diffuser. It draws inspiration from both ancient protective armor and 1970s Italian brutalism, resulting in a functional sculpture that commands attention on any desk, console, or side table.
The "Shield" Diffuser: The oversized circular or semi-circular shade acts as a reflector, bouncing light back onto the stem and the surrounding surface to create a halo effect.
Architectural Proportions: Its exaggerated height-to-width ratio gives it a totemic presence, making it feel like a piece of micro-architecture rather than a mere appliance.
Refined Finishes: Typically available in premium materials such as brushed brass, lacquered metal, or polished chrome, often paired with a stone or heavy metal base for stability.
Hidden Light Source: The LED source is cleverly concealed to ensure the light is entirely indirect, emphasizing the "glow" of the metal rather than the bulb itself.
Designer Recommendations
Executive Desks: The Shield provides an authoritative presence on a desk without creating harsh glare on computer screens or documents.
Entryway Consoles: Position the lamp against a dark-painted wall or a textured wallpaper; the "shield" will create a dramatic circular silhouette of light.
Symmetry in Pairs: Using two Shield lamps at either end of a long sideboard creates a powerful architectural frame for a room.
Is the light bright enough for reading? The Shield is primarily an ambient and accent light. While it provides enough light for a workspace, its main purpose is to create atmosphere and highlight the lamp's sculptural form.
How stable is it? Despite its tall profile, the base is precision-weighted (often with solid brass or steel) to ensure it remains stable on flat surfaces.
What is the "Envolée" collection? This is Joris Poggioli's acclaimed collection that explores themes of flight, lightness, and structural balance.
